Moses Kuria (born 1971) is the current Gatundu South Constituency MP and the leader of the Chama Cha Kazi party. He is noted for being vocal and passionately independent in his political views, which sometimes confuses both friends and opponents. This author examines the political trajectory of a prominent politician.
The Member of Parliament visited Gatundu's Githuya Primary School. He attended Ituru Secondary School after finishing primary school.
He then enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. During his time at university, he was a member of the SONU student leadership organization. He served as SONU's treasurer.
He began his career as an auditor at Family Finance and Building Society in 1994.
He joined All Rajhi Bank in Saudi Arabia in 1995 as the head of business process re-engineering.
He was the chief operating officer of Wamad Information Service in Dubai in 2007. He entered politics the same year, working for President Mwai Kibaki. He was the spokesman and head of programming for the Party of National Unity (PNU).
He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Gatundu South Constituency in 2013. He was elected to the office after Jossy Ngugi, who was elected through the TNA party and had recently died, died. His only opponent, Joachim Kamere of the New Democratic Party, dropped out.
He also became the National Alliance party's official in charge of strategy (TNA). In 2017, he was re-elected as the Jubilee Party's Member of Parliament for Gatundu South. Moses Kuria later joined the hustlers movement led by Deputy President William Ruto. He was also at the forefront of criticizing President Uhuru Kenyatta's and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). He also became the leader of the People's Empowerment Party (PEP).
Moses Kuria took the lead in pushing Ruto's presidential run in the Mt. Kenya region. He promoted the vice president's bottom-up economic message.
After allegedly being booted out of PEP, the MP formed another party, Chama Cha Kazi. He has occasionally disagreed with the vice president and allies, fueling speculation that he is working for the president's side.
Moses Kuria met his wife, Joyce, Njambi in Saudi Arabia. They are blessed with two sons.
Controversy
According to a BBC report, Kuria admitted to accepting $1,000 in parliament in order to support the selection of the majority leader. He stated that such an inducement was not uncommon. He made the remarks in response to charges that he and two others had been censured for supposed payments to support the BBI.
The two-term MP has also been called out on multiple occasions for using hate rhetoric. He was also jailed for violating Covid-19 regulations by failing to adhere to curfew guidelines. Following his arrest, he spent the night at the police station.
The Gatundu South MP was admitted to Karen Hospital and underwent various procedures. High-level guests have included the DP, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, among others.
While other politicians wished Kuria a speedy recovery, Laikipia Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru said the legislator deserved to be in the hospital.
Her WhatsApp message to Moses Kuria was as follows:
“I’m sorry your feet deep fried and burnt. Whoever bought that warmer machine without proper doctors prescription will tell us why your nerves failed you.”
“Polite reminder, when you insult us women with our infant children and parents, we are human beings too,” part of Waruguru message read.
