Justin Muturi's Biography in Summary

Justin Bedan Njoka Muturi, sometimes known as JB, is a Kenyan politician who is presently the Attorney General and formerly the Speaker of the National Assembly.

He has been in charge since 2013, when President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, took office. Muturi was born in Mbeere North, Embu County, on April 28, 1956.

Education
Muturi attended Kangaru Boys' High School before enrolling in the Nairobi School of Law in 1978, where he earned a Bachelor of Law degree in 1981.

Judicial career

Muturi was a Principal Magistrate from 1982 to 1997, when he retired due to bribery and corruption allegations.

He was accused of accepting a bribe of Ksh1 million from Masaba Hospital founder Dr. Godfrey Momanyi and his wife Felgone Akoth in order to influence a case that had been brought before him on July 28, 1995.

Masaba Hospital was charged with defrauding the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) of Ksh347,000.

Before retiring, he was also the chairman of the Judges and Magistrates Association.

Political career

After leaving the judiciary, Muturi became the primary campaigner and strategist for then-Siakago MP Cyrus Ita. Unfortunately, Ita died in 1999, and Muturi was elected as the next Siakago MP on a KANU platform in a by-election. He was re-elected in 2002 and served in the 10th Parliament as the opposition chief whip and chair of the Public Investment Committee. In 2007, he ran again but was defeated by Lenny Kivuti.

Muturi later ran for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat as a member of The National Alliance (TNA), but lost to Muriuki Njagagua. From 1999 to 2004, he was a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Review.

Muturi is Kenya's eighth Speaker of the National Assembly. Notably, he is the first Speaker to serve in the National Assembly following the restoration of a bicameral Parliament, as required by the 2010 Constitution. Muturi was elected speaker in March 2013 following a second round of voting by National Assembly members. He defeated former speaker Kenneth Marende by a vote of 219 to 129.
