Salim Mvurya is a Kenyan politician who served as the county's first governor. President William Ruto recently appointed him as cabinet secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs.
Early Years
Salim Mvurya Mkala was born in 1970 in Kadzandani Village, Kinango District, Kwale County. Further information about his childhood has not been revealed.
Education
Mavirivirini Primary School was where the politician began his education in 1979, followed by Mpeketoni Secondary School from 1987 to 1990. He subsequently went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Agri-Business Management from Egerton University, where he graduated in 1996.
Mvurya also has a Master's Degree in Participation, Power, and Social Change from England's Institute of Development Studies. He also holds credentials in NGO management from MS-TCDC in Arusha, Tanzania.
Career
Salim has 17 years of experience in social development and leadership. He was selected as Plan Kenya's Acting County Director in 2008. He has also worked for organizations such as the Aga Khan Foundation and Egerton University's Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development.

Career in Politics
Mvurya won the Kwale gubernatorial seat in 2013 on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket. In May 2014, he was appointed deputy chairman of the Council of Governors.
Mvurya declared in 2016 that he was leaving ODM and joining the Jubilee Alliance. On August 30th, 2017, he was chosen chairman of the Kenya Council of Governors.
