Roselinda Soipan Tuya, the new Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominee for Environment and Forestry, is an adept politician who has risen through the ranks in government and defied all odds to become Kenya's first Maasai Cabinet nominee.
The former Narok County Woman Representative and daughter of former Narok South Member of Parliament (MP), Samson Ole Tuya, dubbed Narok's "Iron Lady," left elected politics earlier this year but was nominated to the Senate by President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
If her nomination is approved by Parliament, she will succeed outgoing Environment CS Keriako Tobiko, a fellow tribesman from Kajiado County.
The University of Washington, USA, Master of Law (LL.M) graduate and University of Nairobi Bachelor of Law holder had spent two terms as Narok Woman Representative before dropping her bid for the Narok governor seat.
After months of back-and-forth between her, Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo, and former Labour CAS Patrick Ntutu, she renounced her ambition in a compromise arranged by UDA party leader Ruto in late February.
Tuya joined Ruto's campaign secretariat after relinquishing her county seat ambitions and was instrumental in the creation of the UDA Women Charter.
Tuya, who thanked President Ruto for the nomination, said she relinquished her governorship run with her head held high, having done her best with the few resources she had as a Woman Representative.
"We had no funds when we were elected as Woman Representatives in 2013. We fought and won Ksh40 million each year, which is extremely little, especially for a large county like Narok, but we had to accept and use it to make a difference "explained the mother of two children.
She is married to Stephen ole Kudate, the former Narok County Assembly Majority Leader.
Her docket included projects such as providing water tanks, sanitary towels, and monies to strengthen disadvantaged populations such as women, youth, and individuals with impairments.
