Narendra Raval of Kenya, known as 'Guru', is a new addition to Forbes' list of Africa's Richest this year and has investments in steel, aluminum, and cement. Raval was born in India and worked as an assistant priest in a Swaminarayan temple before moving to Kenya as a teenager to serve in another temple. He was expelled from the sect after marrying a Kenyan woman and decided to work in a small steel factory, where he learned how to make steel. In 1986, he and his wife established a small steel processing and trading business in downtown Nairobi using their savings.
That small operation has grown into Devki Group, the largest steel producer in East and Central Africa. The $500 million (revenue) company produces cement, reinforcement bars, and barbed wire. The group's cement division, National Cement Company, produces Kenya's best-selling Simba cement. Raval, a devoted philanthropist, funds a number of orphanages.
