Ida Betty Odinga was born on August 24, 1950 in Migori, Kenya as Ida Anyango Oyoo. She went to Ogande Girls' High School. She got a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 from the University of Nairobi.

She met Raila Odinga at the University of Nairobi, where he was working in the engineering department at the time. On September 1, 1973, they married.

Ida Odinga worked as a teacher for over twenty years after graduating from university. She taught at Kenya High School and all-girls public schools.

She raised her children on her own after her husband, Raila Odinga, was imprisoned in 1982 as a political prisoner by President Daniel Arap Moi's regime. Ida Odinga was later fired as a teacher by the Kenya African National Union, the opposition group founded by her husband.

Ida Odinga formed the League of Kenya Women Voters in 1991 to educate people about political prospects for women. She also served as the League's chairperson.

Ida Odinga was selected as managing director of the East African Spectre, a liquified gas cylinder manufacturing company, in 2003, making her one of Kenya's first female CEOs. In 2010, she was designated one of Kenya's most powerful women.

She endorsed Bill 2018, which would modify Kenya's constitution to empower female candidates and MPs in Parliament, in November 2018. Ida Odinga lobbied for the law, claiming that it would boost leadership positions for female MPs and allow women to compete with male legislators.

She spoke at a Parliamentary discussion in support of sitting female MPs. Despite her complete support, as well as that of other politicians and activists, the bill was defeated in the National Assembly in February 2019.


In 2019, she stated publicly that she will not endorse anyone for the 2022 election, and that people are free to vote for anyone they wish.

According to Ida Odinga, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) should ensure that church leaders receive training in order to deliver quality service to the congregation. While the clergy expected her to retract and apologize, she was supported by Kenya's Atheists Society, which urged that churches not run by theologians be dissolved.

She is also accused around some qurters as the force behind Raila's dorminance and ruthlessness in Nyanza where governors are supposed to submit millions of money to her per month so they can maintain Raila's support.
