After failing to gather enough school fees to attend Harvard, he transferred to the University of Nairobi (UoN). He earned a degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi. Sakaja began his career with Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) at the age of 19 after graduating from university. However, he lost his job a year later. As a result, he was forced to hunt for lowly occupations, such as working at his aunt's cyber café. He even attempted to be a musician during this time, but he failed miserably.

Johnson Sakaja was chosen vice chair of the Actuarial Students Association during his university days. Soon after, he was chosen Chairman of the Nairobi University Student Organization (SONU).

He used his platform as a SONU leader to mobilise the young at the Referendum in 2005. This prepared the path for him to enter national politics when he joined Kibaki's team as the driver for the 2007 elections. He then became the director of the lobbying group Vijana na Kibaki. He took the lead in tallying votes for the presidential secretariat.

He addressed President Mwai Kibaki's Cabinet during the 2008 post-election turmoil at the age of 22. He did this in order to find a solution to the grief produced by the election. During this time, he first met current President Uhuru Kenyatta.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was the Minister of Local Government at the time. Sakaja subsequently moved on to assist in the creation of the 2010 constitution, where he was in charge of defining constituency borders.

He helped found The National Alliance (TNA) at the age of 26, a party that helped President Uhuru Kenyatta win the 2012-2013 presidential elections. At the age of 27, Sakaja became the chairman of TNA.

Sakaja was the TNA's Chairman until September 9, 2016, when the party united with 12 others to establish the Jubilee Party.

The TNA party, which is currently part of the ruling jubilee coalition, then nominated him to Parliament (now Jubilee party). He was elected as the nominated Member of Parliament. He was elected as the senator of Nairobi county in Kenya's general elections on August 8, 2017.

In 2017, then-COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli was on the front lines, urging with Kenyans, particularly Nairobians, to vote for his "son," Johnson Sakaja, who was running for the Nairobi Senatorial seat. Atwoli made these remarks during the Labour Day celebrations, during which he urged Nairobians to vote peacefully.

'Here in Nairobi, what we want is that if you support Kidero, if you support Mike Sonko, if you support my son Sakaja, we want you to conduct peaceful elections,' Atwoli said.

Sakaja won the Nairobi senate seat with 163,448 votes, defeating his opponent Mutinda Kavemba, who received only 33,109 votes.

Sakaja is fortunate to have a lovely wife and two sons. He first saw his wife and sons in public when the family attended a prayer day at Moi Girls High School and Lenana School in late 2017, just before the KCSE exams.
