He then joined Starehe School and then Strathmore School with O and A levels respectively. Thanks to his outstanding achievements, Professor George received a scholarship to the University of Lagos, Nigeria, where he continued his research in human medicine. He also studied at the University Hospital of Lagos and the Royal Graduate School of Medicine in the United Kingdom, where he specialized as a urologist.

He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi for ten years, from 2005 to 2015. He is also Professor of Surgery at the College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi. He also serves on the Kenya Board of Physicians and Dentists as Chairman. On 1 March 2019, Professor Magoha was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary of the Kenya Ministry of Education which he by former President Uhuru Kenyatta which he exited when Ruto assumed office.
