Shirley and Donald Faison were members of the National Black Theatre in Harlem, and one of his earliest memories is of his mother directing rehearsals in the empty theater. She then influenced his career choice.

In 1992, Donald Faison made his feature film debut in Juice, opposite rapper Tupac Shakur. From then on, he appeared in a steady stream of films, including Wesley Snipes' 1993 film Sugar Hill and Angela Bassett's 1995 film Waiting to Exhale. Clueless, released in 1995, was the film that made Faison famous. The film about wealthy teenagers became a cult classic and spawned a television series of the same name. Faison returned to the series as Murray from 1996 to 1999.
