Clement Rapudo Sijenyi, also known as Clemo, is a veteran Kenyan music producer and the co-founder of Calif Records.
He also founded Ngomma VAS, an online music platform that manages and promotes artist content in Kenya and elsewhere.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has nominated the award-winning producer for the position of County Chief Officer.
Music
The minds behind the local radio hit 'Beat ya Clemo' in the early 2000s.
While a first-year student at Egerton University studying food science, the 42-year-old began producing music.
The producer would create beats in his parents' living room, which served as a temporary studio, and record in other studios.
"I'm from Eastlands, and there were almost no opportunities for guys from that part of Nairobi when I was growing up." All of the major studios were located in the downtown areas. I wasn't thinking about money; instead, I wanted to empower young people and, by extension, the entire music industry.
Before getting his hands on the beat makers, the producer always wanted to hear how the musician sounded.
Veteran musicians and California Records
Clemo and his partners conceived of Calif Records in 1998, but it didn't open until 2000 after the partnership fell through.
Clemo first collaborated with his hometown hero, musician Jua Cali, whose name is an abbreviation of Jua California, a term they used to popularize their neighborhood.
He later adopted the moniker Beat Ya Clemo. Nonini, the first musician signed to Calif Records, was the first artist he worked with.
He later collaborated with a slew of other musicians, including Kenyan heavyweights Pilipili, Flexx, Lady S, Jimwat, and Mejja.
VAS Ngomma
The producer is also the founder of Ngomma VAS, a company that specializes in music distribution, online branding and promotion, coding, programming, e-commerce, SMS, and mobile telephone platforms.
YouTube has licensed the platform as a service provider, working with musicians, chefs, stylists, comedians, and animators.
Willy M Tuva, Millard Ayo, Diamond Platnumz, Ali Kiba, Nandy, Clouds TV, and creatives in Rwanda, Burundi, and Zimbabwe have all used Ngomma's online blueprints.
Appointment
Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja appointed Clemmo to the City Culture, Arts, and Tourism docket on Tuesday, December 13.
On Thursday, December 22, he is scheduled to appear before the Culture and Community Services Committee for vetting.
