As Ecuador welcomes Chile, the two American football giants are each having their own problems off the peach.
On Tuesday, Ecuador hosts Chile in World Cup qualifying in Quito.
Chile's manager, Eduardo Berizzo, resigned following a 0-0 draw with Paraguay on Thursday, and Ecuador is fighting to stay in contention despite starting with a three-point deduction.
Berizzo's tenure as Chile's coach came to an end on Thursday after they were held at home by 10-man Paraguay.
Despite having a man advantage for nearly half of the game, Chile never threatened and looked clueless as they limped to a 0-0 draw, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
Chile's talisman Alexis Sanchez apologized to his now-former manager for his and his teammates' performances after the game, but Berizzo is no longer in charge and has been replaced by caretaker Nicolas Cordova.
Berizzo's future was already in doubt following a humiliating 3-0 loss to Venezuela last month, and Thursday's draw means they have only won one of their first five qualifiers - against bottom-placed Peru.
The Chilean FA will be determined not to fail again after missing out on the last two World Cups, especially given the expanded format.
Chile is currently ranked eighth, with the top six automatically qualifying and the seventh advancing to an inter-confederation playoff.
However, it is still early days, and Chile is tied on points with Ecuador and Paraguay, both of which are in the top seven, but they have yet to face Brazil or Argentina, who rarely give up points easily in qualifying.
Despite starting with a minus-three point deficit due to the Byron Castillo debacle from the previous qualifying campaign, Ecuador are still showing good form in their attempts to overcome that early disadvantage.
Despite the penalty, they are in the top six on goal difference, ahead of Paraguay and Chile.
Despite the fact that they are not the most entertaining team to watch, 18 of their last 25 matches have seen two goals or fewer.
Unsurprisingly, defensive solidity has been key to their recent success, as they entered the last World Cup on the back of six straight clean sheets, before also keeping one in the tournament opener against Qatar.
Felix Sanchez Bas's team kept another two clean sheets in their last two games, both of which ended in a 0-0 draw with Colombia and Venezuela.
These results followed two wins in September and October, when Ecuador defeated Bolivia and remains the only team to have defeated Uruguay to date.
