Kiambu's first governor was a politician from Kenya named William Kabogo Gitau. Kabogo was born on April 4, 1961, in Ruiru.
Prior to enrolling at Punjab University in India, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Bcom) degree, he attended nearby schools.
After graduating, he went back to Kenya and started out as an auditor before starting his own private company. He entered elected politics in 2002 after running for the parliamentary seat of Juja.
Being one of the first Kenyan politicians to employ a helicopter during an election campaign, his extravagant campaigns immediately attracted national notice. Tensive interactions with then-powerful minister John Michuki characterized his first tenure.
Two of Kabogo's brothers were taken into custody and accused of killing a CID officer who was looking into the Ksh5.3 billion cocaine haul that the police had seized in 2004.
Kabogo lost the Juja parliamentary seat in the 2007 general election due to contentious circumstances, including numerous claims of election tampering. On a Narc Kenya ticket, he won the 2010 by-election and successfully contested the election of George Thuo, who is now deceased.
After switching allegiances, the affluent politician was a member of the group that assisted Uhuru Kenyatta in forming the National Alliance (TNA). He later formed a partnership with William Ruto of the URP to form the Jubilee alliance. On a TNA ticket, Kabogo was elected governor of Kiambu; however, he lost the general election to Ferdinand Waititu Babayao in 2017.
Kabogo has continued to be politically active outside of government, frequently establishing himself as one of the political leaders providing guidance in the Mount Kenya region through the use of social media and vernacular stations. He also supports the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and is a close confidant of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
