Robert Alai was born on November 11, 1979, in Kenya's Nyanza region. He attended Boya Primary School and Onjiko High School for his secondary schooling. Later, he was transferred to Lela Secondary School, where he completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam in 1998.
He came to Nairobi after finishing secondary school and was accepted to Africa Virtual University, where he studied information technology. He also graduated from Kenyatta University, where he took additional information technology courses.
Robert Alai began his career at Telkom Kenya as an intern. He was engaged as a logistics officer by the UN Mission in Congo after a short period, which forced him to relocate to Tanzania. His contract expired in 2007.
He founded Kazi Africa Limited, which connects job seekers with companies. He did finally sell it.
He also created and later sold My African Career, his second web platform.
In 2007, he returned to Kenya from Tanzania. During the election, Alai began using his internet platform to keep Kenyans informed and engaged.
He used to run the website Techmtaa.com, which he eventually sold. Alai is the current owner of the well-known news website Kahawatungu.com.

Prior to 2022 general elections in Kenya, Robert joined politics and was initially to run for an mp seat in Nyando Kisumu county his hometown but was convinced by the ODM boss Raila Odinga to run for Kieleleshwa MCA seat which was successful making him an honorable member.
