He loved football from an early age, and at the age of eight, he would play with other students. Michael grew up in Lakisama, Nairobi, and comes from a low-income family.

The footballer was born to Joseph Ogada Olunga and Alice Ogada. He lost his father when he was seven years old. Growing up, he admired his older brother, who had gone through a rigorous educational system. He would also play football with other youngsters barefoot, and they would occasionally get hurt. This encouraged him to work hard.

He began playing for Liberty Sports Academy while still a student at Upper Hill Secondary. He helped his school to the nationals and was the leading scorer, giving him the title of most important player in Nairobi. In the 2012 season, he scored 32 goals.

On a one-year loan from Liberty Sports Academy, he joined Kenya Premier League club Tusker in December 2012. He subsequently spent a year on loan with Thika United before joining Gor Mahia for the 2015 season. He was the club's leading scorer at the end of the season.

In March 2015, he scored his first goal for Harambee Stars in a 2-0 win over South Sudan in a friendly match.

He signed a four-year contract with the Swedish club Djurgardens in February 2016. In August, he scored his first two goals in a victory over IFK Goteborg and was chosen man of the match.
