Charles Karumi Maina, known professionally as Charlie Karumi, is a Kenyan actor and radio (NRG Radio)/TV presenter. He has appeared in numerous plays, TV shows, and films. He is best known for his role as Tony in the Kenyan drama Jane and Abel, as well as hosting K24's entertainment magazine show Arena 254.
Charlie was born on August 17, 1991 in Nairobi, Kenya, and raised in Uthiru. He attended Alliance High School, where he discovered his love for the stage through the school drama club.
He later enrolled at Strathmore University to pursue a degree in Business Information Technology, which helped launch his acting career. He landed his first acting role in the Kenyan television series Changes.
He has since appeared in several films, including Lies That Bind, Nairobi Half-Life, Rush, and Noose of Gold.
In 2015, he won the Kalasha Award for Best Supporting Actor for the comedy 'Fundi-mentals'.
Karumi was born on August 17, 1991, in Nairobi and grew up in the Uthiru neighbourhood on the city's outskirts. He began his education at Genesis Primary School in Uthiru, then moved on to Visa Oshwal Primary in Westlands and finally White Cottage Primary in Gachie, where he took his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam in 2005. He then attended Alliance High School in Kikuyu for secondary education, where he took his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams in 2008.
He discovered his love of the stage while attending Alliance High, where he joined the school's drama club 'The Dramatics Society' and landed roles in two of the club's national award-winning productions.
In 2009, he enrolled at Strathmore University in Nairobi to pursue a bachelor's degree in Business Information Technology, graduating in April 2013.
Karumi's professional career began while at Strathmore. He landed his first paid role on the Kenyan television series Changes.
In 2009, he joined the renowned Kenyan repertoire theatre Phoenix Players, where he trained and performed in several of the company's plays. With that training, he began his career in earnest, booking roles in several Kenyan television and film productions, including Higher Learning, Lies That Bind, Nairobi Half-Life, Noose of Gold, and Rush.
In 2014, he appeared in Maisha Magic East's Jane and Abel alongside Mumbi Maina, Brian Ogola, Lizz Njagah, and Sarah Hassan.
In 2015, he starred alongside Gerald Langiri in the comedy Fundi-Mentals, for which he won the 2015 Kalasha Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Karumi debuted in TV hosting in 2015, when she competed in the KTN The Presenter Season 2 talent search and made it to the final 10. A year later, he successfully auditioned for and participated in TLC's Next Great Presenter, an Africa-wide talent search. He finished second runner-up following a successful campaign that saw him advance to the competition's final stage.
In 2017, he hosted K24's entertainment magazine show Arena 254 before landing a role in South Africa's upcoming Danish Broadcasting Corporation TV series Liberty, based on Jakob Ejersbo's book of the same name.
Charlie began working on the breakfast show at Homeboyz Radio in 2021, with G Money as his co-host, after leaving NRG Radio.
