Career

Kiraitu worked for over ten years as a partner in a law firm he co-founded with Kamau Kuria and Aaron Ringera. During this time, Kiraitu's main case was representing political prisoners of the Daniel Moi government, including Wanyiri Kihoro, against the government.

The case is covered in Wanyiri Kihoro's book 'Never Say Die,' The Chronicle of a Political Prisoner, and resulted in Kuria Kihoro's detention in an attempt to cause the case to be dropped, as well as a period of exile in various western countries for both Kiraitu and Kuria Kihoro. Following Kiraitu's return from exile, he joined the fight for multi-party democracy as one of Kenya's 'Young Turks' in 1990. Following Kenya's return to multi-party politics in 1991, he joined the newly formed FORD (Forum for the Restoration of Democracy), and was elected to parliament on the FORD ticket in the first multi-party election in 1992, as MP for South Imenti Constituency, Meru County.
