Justice Marete DK Njagi has been practicing law for over three decades. He is one of those lawyers who rose to prominence without ever working in private practice. Throughout his career, he has made some unpopular decisions that have nearly cost him his job. Last year, he was suspended for five months after being accused of misconduct. He was later reinstated due to a lack of proof regarding the allegations against him.
Education
Marete earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi before enrolling in the Kenya School of Law for a postgraduate diploma in law. He also has a Master of Laws from the University of Nairobi and a Theology diploma from the Presbyterian Church of East Africa.
Career
He joined the attorney general's office as a state counsel after graduating from Kenya School of Law. He held this position for fifteen years, steadily rising through the ranks to become the principal state counsel.
He joined the Teachers Service Commission as a senior legal counsel in 2003 and remained there until 2009. On the 2nd of February 2009, he retired from TSC, citing "public interest." He filed a kes 26.3 million lawsuit against TSC, seeking damages for breach of contract, punitive damages, exemplary damages, and aggravated damages. The industrial court agreed that the public interest had not been disclosed and awarded Marete kes1.91 million, a decision that the court of appeal upheld.
Family
Justice Marete is a married man although this writer was not able to establish how many children the couple have.
