JB rose from humble beginnings to become one of the Gikuyu language's most influential musicians. JB has remained current over the years and continues to appeal to fans of all generations through affiliate acts such as Salim Junior and Wyre. We look back at his life and musical journey.
John Boniface (JB) Maina was born in the Nyeri district of Othaya. His family went to Nakuru and eventually Nyahururu when he was a child, where he spent the majority of his childhood. Although he had an early interest in music, he did not pursue it professionally until he was 15 years old.
It was a chance meeting with the then-thriving Maranga wa Gatonye at a pub in Nyeri that paved the way for JB. Wa Gatonye not only inspired him, but he also gave him a small token to let him fly to Nairobi to try his luck.
JB would shortly form a partnership with Joe Mwangi in Nairobi (Of Mercury Records fame). Mwangi had a music production company and managed singers under his label. JB was assigned as his studio hand and would fill in for live concerts when big names like John Ndichu and Wahome wa Maingi were unable to appear. JB would hone his vocals and live performance talents during this sting.
Kabete Muiritu
Muiritu wa Kabete, published in Cassette format in 1990, was possibly JB's most popular and successful album to date. The title song, Tiga Kumute, Cece, Tuhua twa Rose, and Mundia Tawa were among the songs on the 10-truck album. JB was a household name by this point, with fame that extended beyond the Mt Kenya region. He managed a profitable music store in Nairobi's downtown. Sammy Muraya and John De'Mathew were among his contemporaries.
Mugithi is introduced.
A collection of new musicians emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the then catchy and fresh 'one man' approach. Music from the past would be played over a slow-paced rhythm guitar with leud lyrics. Salim Junior and Mike Murimi are two examples of such artists. Salim's 'one man' renditions of JB songs brought life to the now-defunct celebrity.
Wyre's Collaboration
JB's music was gathering a large audience across the country, and new age singers like Wyre couldn't ignore it. Wyre will soon capitalize on JB's now-nationally popular Tiga Kumute (Mwanake) in Dancehall style. The ensuing collaboration was a smash single that has received extensive exposure to this day.
