Tabitha Karanja, full name Tabitha Mukami Muigai Karanja, is the Nakuru senator and a Kenyan businesswoman and entrepreneur. Tabitha is the founder and current CEO of Keroche Breweries, Kenya's largest non-multinational brewery. According to October 2012 statistics, Keroche accounts for 20% of beer consumption in Kenya.
She was born in Kijabe, central Kenya, and after attending Kenyan schools, she worked as an Accounting Clerk for the Ministry of Tourism. In Naivasha, she met and married her husband, who owned a successful hardware store. In 1997, the couple closed the hardware store and began making wine.
She has four children with her husband, Joseph Karanja, who is the Chairman of Keroche Breweries Limited; the children are James Karanja, Anerlisa Muigai, Edward Muigai, and Tecra Muigai.
After meeting in Naivasha town, where he owned a successful hardware store, she married Joseph Muigai Karanja. In 1997, they closed the hardware store and went into the wine-making business.
She attempted to refute the claims by contacting unfair competitors of her company, but she was unsuccessful. The KRA won the case in court, forcing her to make arrangements to settle the arrears.
Tabitha and Joseph began making fortified wine in early 1997, with a focus on the lower end of the market. When the government imposed high taxes on locally produced wines in 2007, her product was priced out of the market, so she switched to producing ready-to-drink gin and vodka, which her state-of-the-art factory continues to produce to this day. She began drinking beer in 2008, with the 'Summit' brand.
The factory began expansion plans to increase beer production from 60,000 bottles per day to 600,000 bottles per day in 2013. The refurbished plant, which cost KSh5 billion, was commissioned by Adan Mohammed, on 31st March, 2015.
Area MP Kihagi threatened to break into the Keroche Breweries Ltd company and inspect for second generation brews months after Adan Mohammed's commissioning. This was also in response to a recent tax evasion scandal in which she was accused by the KRA of evading tax payments of up to Kshs. 14 billion. Noordin Haji, Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions, issued an arrest warrant for her.
