Gathoni Wa Mucomba was born in 1975 in Kiambu County, which is in Kenya's Central Province, in the Komothai ward of the Githunguri constituency.She excelled in her early education, being the best student in her district.After offering to cover her tuition, a kindhearted person assisted in getting her enrolled at Precious Blood Secondary School in Riruta, Kiambu County, one of Kenya's public schools.[4] Gathoni later started working as an unskilled teacher at Makuyu Secondary School in Muranga County.

Later, she enrolled in University of Nairobi, where she pursued a bachelor's degree in education.She obtained employment at KBC radioKameme FM while still a student, where she hosted an agricultural show. Later, Inooro recruited Gathoni.

She defeated Ann Nyokabi, her closest challenger, to win the Jubilee Party of Kenya's party primary elections in 2017.She received 922,829 votes, making her the third-highest vote-getter behind presidential candidates Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, and she was chosen to represent women in Kiambu County.

Before taking the oath of office, Gathoni stirred up controversy when she asserted that Kenya's lawmakers shouldn't receive pay cuts because they deserve recognition for the hard work they put in.[7] The public expressed disapproval of her remarks both outdoors and online.
