Freshly Mwamburi is a Kenyan musician who specializes in the rhumba genre. Rhumba, he claims, never dies and has a message that most contemporary songs lack.
Stella Wangu, one of his greatest hits, was released in 1992. It's a timeless song with a profound message that continues to capture the attention of millions. People fell in love with the song, which is both hilarious and sad. So, what is his backstory, and why did this song resonate with millions of Kenyans?
Age
Mwamburi Mwakachola (Freshley Mwamburi) was born on November 7, 1958, on the Kilimanjaro slopes in Wundanyi, Taita.
Education
Before attending Alidina Visram, the singer attended Changamwe Boys Day and Boarding School. He discovered his love of singing when he joined the school choir.
A Career in Music
At the age of 15, he formed the Mombasa International Band.
He joined the Air Force as an artiste after graduating from high school. In 1983, he was signed by the Simba Wanyika band, which was led by the late Wilson Peter Kinyonga and his brother George Peter Kinyonga.
He joined Les Wanyika, a group led by the late John Ngereza and Prof Omar, in 1987. The musician performed in Mama Watoto's, Lipi La Ajabu's, and Afro's long play.
He later left Les Wanyika to form his own band, Everest Kings.
He used the song Stella Wangu as the album cover in 1992. His song went on to become an evergreen number, propelled to the top by Freshley's emotional refrain to Stella to "Come back" to him, and kept there by the cozy place love stories occupy in creative arts and pop culture.
He also did a remix nearly 30 years after its original release, which brought back many nostalgic memories for Rhumba fans who listened to it in the 1990s. The remix music video and audio were shot in Kenya's beautiful scenery at the Golden Palm Hotel, Kenol, and other locations.
Stella Wangu
Mwamburi first met Stella when he went to perform at the Garden Hotel in Machakos after his band, Everest Kings, relocated from Thika. Stella was a university student in Nairobi at the time. Stella won a scholarship to Japan as fate would have it, and the two began dating. This was the tipping point, and to demonstrate his love, the singer helped raise funds to ease Stella's stay abroad, even selling his car.
The day came for Stella to return to Kenya, and the singer went to greet his love at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). He had no idea their love story had changed forever. Instead of walking out of arrivals into Freshley's arms, Stella was carrying a baby and was accompanied by a short Japanese man. She'd refer to him as her husband, and the child as theirs. Instead of throwing a tantrum, the singer went to the studio and recorded the hit Stella Wangu.
Aside from this hit song, he has also performed other songs such as
Mombasa ya Safari
Mipango Panga
Moyoni and Siri
Hawana Wivu Wanawake
Ndugu Tuelewane
The Mtongwe Ferry
Margy
Musa, Jirani
Mashabik
Family
Dorcas Nduku, the Taita singer's wife, and their five children live happily ever after. The wife was initially uncomfortable with Stella, but they are now a happily married couple.
