Casandra Elizabeth Ventura was born in New London, Connecticut, on August 26, 1986. Her father is Filipino, and her mother is African-American, West Indian, and Mexican. Rod is her brother. She attended the Williams School on the Connecticut College campus.
At the age of 14, she began modeling for local department stores, Seventeen (magazine), and Delia's fashion catalogue.
She appeared briefly in the music video for 'Just a Friend 2002' by American singer Mario. She studied vocals and modern ballet, as well as participating in the school's performing arts program.
She graduated from high school in 2004.
She later relocated to New York City and resumed her modeling career. She enrolled in classes at the 'Broadway Dance Center' and began booking print and commercial modeling jobs.
Ryan Leslie, a record producer, spotted her frequently at clubs and parties in late 2002 and discovered her. He assisted her in making demo tapes. They co-wrote the duet 'Kiss Me,' and Leslie recorded and performed it for music executive Tommy Mottola, who then offered Cassie a management deal.
Cassie was signed as the first artist by Leslie's music-media company, NextSelection Lifestyle Group, which he co-founded with Rasheed Richmond in 2005. Cassie emerged as one of the year's fastest rising R&B acts, guided by Leslie.
Leslie wrote and produced her debut single, 'Me & U,' which was released on April 25, 2006, as the lead single from her debut album, 'Cassie' (2006). The song peaked at #3 on the 'U.S. Billboard Hot 100' in 2006 and remained in the top forty for approximately 20 weeks. It became a club hit in Germany and went on to become one of Atlantic Records' biggest records.
Leslie's 'NextSelection,' 'Diddy's Bad Boy Records,' and 'Atlantic Records' released her self-titled debut album, 'Cassie,' on August 8, 2006. Leslie produced the album, which was an experimental R&B and pop album with hip hop influences.
'Cassie,' the album, debuted at #4 on the 'US Billboard 200' and stayed on the chart for 13 weeks. It received positive reviews and was compared to Janet Jackson. To promote the album, she appeared on MTV's 'Total Request Live' and BET's popular hip hop and R&B music video show '106 & Park: BET's Top 10 Live.
She rose to prominence with 'Cassie,' which gained a cult following and earned her recognition as a pioneer of "experimental R&B." On July 10, 2015, English record label 'Be With Records' released an LP of the album.
Cassie made her film debut in 'Step Up 2: The Streets,' in which she played Sophie Donovan.
The film was released on February 14, 2008, and was a huge box-office success.
She sang the lead single, 'Is It You,' from the 'Step Up 2: The Streets' soundtrack album. On November 13, 2007, it was made available for digital download. It charted in several major international territories, including the UK R&B (Official Charts Company) at #10.
In July 2009, she announced 'Electro Love' as her second album. She gave birth to three singles, but none of them did well in the United States. The 'Official Girl,' 'Must Be Love,' and 'Let's Get Crazy' are among them.
She graduated from UIW with a Baccalaureate of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Psychology.
She was romantically involved with Diddy from 2006 to 2008 before reuniting with him in 2015, and the two are still going strong today.
