Most Kenyans have seen DJ Afro's films at some point. He is by far Kenya's most well-known movie commentator. In fact, in some regions, a group of people may gather and pay a nominal fee to watch a DJ Afro movie. The films are entertaining and intriguing, with his amusing voice bursting through the screen. This has enabled people in Kenya and even Tanzania to watch and comprehend how a movie is being played, even if it is in a language they do not understand.
Real name
James Muigai is his given name. His stage name is DJ Afro. As he gained notoriety, people began stealing his stage name and even utilizing it to create Facebook pages. To differentiate himself, he added some syllables to his name, DJ Afro Amigos AKA Kimoda.
DJ Afro is a very private individual. He has never revealed any information about his family in any of his interviews. It's also unclear where he went to school.
Career Highlights
DJ Afro began translating movies for a living at a period when most people were unaware that it was possible. It was a highly unique notion conceived by an equally unique individual. He has been doing this profession for almost 14 years, celebrating his tenth year in 2016. His path to celebrity was not an easy one. He, like most successful people, suffered.
Challenges
He charges shs60 per recording after working on a movie for a long period. However, as soon as he sells one film, others copy it and resell it for Shs5. This implies that despite his efforts, he receives virtually little from the film. However, he stated that it was fine because his films may help others earn a living.
He drew the notice of Kenya Films and Classification Board in 2018. (KFCB). Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, the CEO, was dissatisfied with the coarse language used in the majority of his films. While the incident was being investigated, his films were suspended, and Gikuyu TV was told not to air them.
DJ Afro admitted his error and noted that some of the films being disseminated were some of his previous works that had been replicated by others. After discussions with the board, the restriction was removed, and his films continue to air on Gikuyu TV.
