Nairobi. Congolese singer Alicious Theluji arrived in Kenya as a six-year-old child and spent her entire childhood and adult life in Nairobi, but she has now decided to return to Congo. According to close associates, she has returned to her birthplace of Goma in eastern Congo.
She has been quiet in the music scene for some time, which she attributes to the fact that she returned home after it became peaceful.
"I have actually returned to Congo for some time. I came to Kenya when I was six years old. I've lived and grown up here, and I believe there are things I still need to learn from Congo," Alicious says.
Alicious, who rose to prominence in 2012 with her debut single 'Mpita Njia' featuring Ugandan singer Juliana Kanyamozi, relocated to Kenya with her mother to escape political violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The 30-year-old mother of one is among the few female musicians doing well in Kenya's music industry.
Following her breakthrough with the hit 'Mpitia Njia', she appeared in another club banger 'Mobimba' alongside the now-defunct boys band P-Unit.
Over the years, she has released several songs and collaborated with Kenyan heavyweights, including 'Posa ya bolingo', 'Anita', 'Nyumbani' featuring Kagwe Mungai, and 'Ya Nini' featuring rapper Khaligraph Jones.
Background and Education
She was born in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1987 to "Jacky Kahara Laini" and a businessman father. Her mother was a singer and tailor. Theluji's father died in a car accident when she was four years old.
The family, which included Theluji, two siblings, and their mother, moved to Kinshasa, the capital and largest city in DR Congo. The family visited Kenya in 1993, when she was six years old, but then returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo. When the First Congo War broke out in 1996, forcing Mobutu Sese Seko from power, the family sought refuge in Nairobi.
Alicios attended St. Mary's School in Nairobi for her high school education. She then left Kenya to attend Blekinge Institute of Technology, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics. She also has a Master of Science degree in Business Management from a Swedish institution.
Career
Alicios recorded her first song, Mpita Njia, in 2011 and released it in 2012, while still an undergraduate. Alicios composed and wrote the song, which included a collaboration with Ugandan performer Juliana Kanyomozi. Alicios has a successful solo recording career, with collaborations from other prominent East African artists on some of his albums. She now spends a lot of time in Sweden, where she lives alongside her mother and step-sister.
In 2017, Alicios signed a recording deal with Kenya's largest record label, Taurus Musik, which also labels Lady Jaydee[4]. Alicios Theluji is the mother of one son, Kito, born around 2015. His father is also from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and they met when Alicios was 13 years old.
