When Enock Ondego, 90, died on February 26, one thing stood out: not many young Kenyans knew about this great nationalist icon.
one of Kenya's most prominent songwriters, died in his home in Kisauni, Mombasa County, after suffering a stroke.
Most Kenyans recognize him as the composer of the well-known Wimbo wa Historia and Kenya Yetu songs, which were written to evoke memories of the liberation struggle. The songs are still played at national holidays like Jamhuri Day and Madaraka Day.
Despite his close ties to Kenya's founding father, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, his family claims Ondego has spent the last five decades in despair. It is now seeking assistance in raising more than Sh150,000 to provide him with a proper burial in Vihiga County.
Ondego's daughter-in-law, told the Nation that the renowned teacher was in good health until he received a phone call from the county commissioner's office two days before he died.
