Five months after the gruesome murder of Rita Waeni, a 20-year-old student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), the main suspect is still at large, leaving the family with unanswered questions.

Waeni was discovered dead in Roysambu, with her body dismembered and the head missing. It was later discovered at a dam in Kiambu County on January 21.

In a lengthy feature titled "Crimes Untold," investigative journalist Franklin Wallah shared Waeni's family's frustrations with the lack of updates from the detectives handling the case, particularly since the release of two Nigerian suspects in February. According to Waeni's mother, her daughter mentioned a person named C.M. whom she intended to meet, but she was unaware of the context or platform of their communication.

Waeni's last conversation with her aunt revealed that she planned to meet this person for dinner at a mall on Thika Road.

The aunt recalled leaving Waeni at home around 3:30 p.m., after which she received a text message from Waeni stating her intention to meet the man. Concerned, the aunt contacted Waeni's mother.

Waeni's mother explained that her daughter felt it was urgent to meet the suspect because he claimed to be leaving the country the next day. Despite attempts to postpone the meeting, Waeni eventually agreed to go ahead with it.

Security cameras caught Waeni and the suspect walking towards a rented apartment for the night.

Waeni's video from that fateful night depicted the apartment's living room with drinks and music, but it did not include the suspect's face. In April, the DCI revealed that it had traced the Instagram account used to communicate with Waeni, which was named Carlton Maina.

However, DCI stated that the account name was changed multiple times before being removed immediately following the student's murder.

Waeni's father revealed that he spoke with Mohamed Amin, the head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who assured him that they could find the perpetrator. He urged the DCI's boss, the Inspector General, and the President to take prompt action to resolve the case.

Rita Waeni's Mother Shares What She Knew about Man Who Killed Her Daughter

Rita Waeni, a 20-year-old student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), was brutally murdered in Roysambu in January.
Waeni's story went viral on Sunday, January 13, after her mutilated body was discovered in an Airbnb on TRM Drive in Roysambu. Citizen TV reported that Rita had traveled from her aunt's house in Syokimau to Roysambu to meet with the alleged murderer.

What did Waeni's mother say about the killer?

During an interview with TV 47 on Thursday, May 9, Waeni's mother revealed new information about her daughter's killer.
Waeni's mother revealed that she knew her daughter's alleged killer, revealing his name during the interview.

She also revealed that Waeni's friend had informed her that Waeni had met the man when she visited her in Nairobi West. She also stated that the man did not ask for Rita's contact information, but rather for her Instagram account. The mother revealed that Waeni's friend visited their home two months after her daughter's burial, claiming to have had a series of nightmares.

The lady requested to visit Waeni's grave. "When Waeni's birthday approached on March 28, she expressed a desire to visit the grave. This shocked me...That's how she had to explain to me everything she knew."

According to messages obtained from Rita's Instagram account, she and the suspect had met twice prior to the tragic day.
The mother stated that her daughter felt it necessary to meet with the suspect, who allegedly stated his intention to leave the country on Sunday, January 14, just one day after the incident.

The killer demanded a ransom.

Earlier, on January 17, Waeni's father revealed that he received a chilling message from her phone number demanding a KSh 500,000 ransom within 24 hours for her release. The family promptly reported the incident to the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), resulting in swift investigations. Tragically, the family was unable to obtain additional information or negotiate because some demands were made after Rita had already been murdered.
