Concern as AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine pulled for rare but deadly side effects

The AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is no longer manufactured or distributed anywhere in the world.

The company admits that in rare cases, it can cause a potentially fatal condition known as 'thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome' (TTS).

TTS is defined by blood clots and low blood platelet counts in humans.

According to the Independent, AstraZeneca is facing a class action lawsuit worth up to £100 million for approximately 50 victims in the UK.

AstraZeneca is removing its COVID-19 vaccine, Vaxzevria, from the market, according to CNN. The company cited low sales as the reason for its removal.

The vaccine was not authorized or approved in the United States, and sales had been slow worldwide. Sales of the vaccine increased from nearly $4 billion in 2021 to $12 million in 2023.1 The European Medicines Agency (EMA), the continent's medical governing body, announced the vaccine's removal on its website, writing: "The marketing authorization for Vaxzevria (SRD) has been withdrawn at the request of the marketing-authorisation holder."

The vaccine has been linked to vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, which was described as a rare adverse effect, and has been subject to subsequent lawsuits.

A formal media statement was not provided on the company's website, and the company's COVID-19 focus appears to be shifting to its investigational long-acting monoclonal antibody (LAAB), Sipavibart (formerly AZD3152). According to AstraZeneca, Sipavibart was designed to provide broad and powerful coverage across Omicron and ancestral viral variants by neutralizing spike protein interaction with the host receptor ACE2.

However, there is no need to worry for those took the Astrazeneca vaccine years ago and are still okay according to medical professionals. The effect was almost immediate and if one is okay right now, it means they were not affected badly by the virus.
