Maurice Ochieng, also known as Danny Miles, the cancer patient from Kisumu who went viral after making a heartfelt plea to Safaricom for assistance in raising his daughter, has died.
Miles, a Muhoroni native, died on March 21 after a long battle with soft tissue sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affects the tissues that connect, support, and surround other body structures.
Florence Odege, the deceased's wife, confirmed the news on Wednesday morning, saying her husband died in her arms on Tuesday night at 9:55 p.m.
Many Kenyans were moved to tears when the deceased posted a heartfelt message on Safaricom's Facebook page asking for help to support his family in January of this year.
Miles stated in a January 19, 2023 post that he was diagnosed with cancer in March 2022 and had spent all of his savings on medication.
Miles said that with his left hand amputated and the cancer rapidly spreading, he was unable to provide for his family and had to rely on friends for daily bread.
The 24-year-old stated that he had hoped to take the family on a vacation as well as take his young daughter to school, but he was unable to do so due to financial constraints.
He begged the telco to take the family on a "once-in-a-lifetime ride" as his last day on Earth approached.
"I had been saving so that I take my small family to a vacation but I have been drained I can't. I'm getting by with the help of friends. "My young daughter Britney Dova is still young; she hasn't started school yet; I had planned, but I'm sorry I failed as a father," Miles wrote.
