She was crowned Miss Mamelodi Sundowns in 2015. In 2017, she reached the semi-finals of the Miss South Africa competition (ranking 26th). She was crowned Miss South Africa 2019 two years later.

She went on to win the much-hyped Miss Universe title. She became the third South African to do so (after Margaret Gardiner in 1978 and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in 2017), the first Black woman to do so since 2011 (after Leila Lopes), and the first in history with afro-textured hair.

On November 11th, 2019, she tweeted a request for South African men to write love letters to women in order to show their support in the fight against gender-based violence. She stated her intentions as follows: "I am asking men to write love letters to South African women." Those letters will be inscribed on fabric ribbons that will be worn as part of my national costume. So I'll be wearing a love letter from South African men to women.
