Wanavokali, which is a Swahili word meaning vocalists, is a Kenyan acapella band group, that was initially started in 2018.
The band came together through the Safaricom Twaweza Live in 2018, at which they were background vocalists. The group comprises six members; Riki, Lena, Chepkorir, Mella, Rui, and Ythera.
Their debut into the music industry came after releasing, Nyashinski's 'Malaika' cover, among others. Thereafter, they were selected among 12 other groups to participate in the Pan African Music Competition, the Old Mutual Amazing Voices, season 1. And through their hard work, determination, passion, dedication, and love for music, they emerged as the winners. This was a huge milestone and breakthrough for them and after that, they teamed up with Kenya's, Collo G, and released an uplifting single, 'Nioshe.'
Their reason for choosing to go the acapella style was, to create a niche for themselves, after having worked as lead and background vocalists. This untapped area in the music industry would create value for their craft, opening Kenya and the industry at large, to the acapella vibe, and gifted talents, that vocalists' have to offer, ending the trend of being overlooked, and undervalued.
The band looks forward to working with other artists locally and internationally and becoming a household name. And with no doubt, they have truly kept their word, and living up to it, as they recently released a hit song, 'Rhumba,' setting the pace, showing they are here to stay, for serious business, and not child's play.
