Toby Bisengo's Biography in Summary

Toby Bisengo's new hit single, Muyority, depicts a man being struck by cupid.

He shares his love story, as a smitten man who has fallen head over heels for his 'bae'. He opens up to the world with this 'Muyority' feeling, which is KiKamba slang for sweetness. This is the new song his fans are listening to.

Bisengo hugs his bass guitar with passion and purpose. It's easy to see why he's become such a popular singer, performing at dowry and wedding ceremonies, anniversaries, and social gatherings.

When we sit down to talk, he is completely booked for the next two months.

On this day, we're at his Elevax Media studio in Donholm, Nairobi, where he spends the majority of his weekdays recording music and mentoring aspiring artists.

It's a hive of activity, and he excuses himself to attend to clients before sitting down for the interview. I wait. I had waited two months, after all.

Tobias 'Mulwa' Bisengo, as his full name is, has improved his craft since entering the professional singing scene in 2007. His love songs have turned into wedding anthems, making him a household name in the Eastern region.

His debut 2018 song Umunthi Wiwakwa (Today You Are Mine) introduced him to many, and his 2019 hit Katolo (Dust) earned him a near-cult following and thrust him into fame.

His music video songs, some of which are approaching one million views on YouTube, feature female groups, weddings, and female 'chamas'.

He claims to make them on the fly, mostly after receiving invitations from fans who want to be featured in them.

Finding love again.

"I'm not done with love." I hope to settle down next year... However, I dislike discussing details about family matters."

Bisengo grew up in Machakos. Born to a Congolese father and a Kamba mother, he learned to speak both Lingala and KiKamba.

He says his Congolese heritage has had a significant impact on his musical career, including how he dresses for performances.

"Bisengo is a Congolese name that loosely translates as happiness," he explains.

"I like to dress well, and as you mentioned, being flamboyant is part of the business. As a brand, you must understand that people are constantly judging your image as well as listening to your music.

"Because I sing about love, I should look very clean and presentable. "I enjoy cultural dressing and have a designer who gives me a new look for each show," he says.

Bisego recalls a time when Kamba benga musicians were well-known for songs that entertained and educated without being vulgar.

It was the 1990s, when David Kasyoki of the legendary Katitu Boys Band, Peter Mwambi and his Kyanganga Boys, and Sila Munyao led the Ngoleni Brothers.

"That was a good season for Benga music in Kenya. Katitu gave Eastern benga a national identity. We should be able to make a good representation of our culture-themed music genres, as these are what define us as Kenyans.

"If you listen to my music, it has that same groove that lets you know that we have our own space in the creative sector," Bisengo says.
