Tiwatope Savage, more commonly known as Tiwa Savage, is a versatile Nigerian artist skilled in various genres. She excels as a singer, songwriter, backup vocalist, ambassador, and actress.
Her rise to fame began when she served as a backup singer for renowned American artists like George Michael and Mary J. Blige, among others.
Tiwatope Savage–Balogun was born on February 5, 1980, in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State. Although she maintains a private personal life, it's known that she has at least two brothers and a sister.
When she was 11 years old, her family relocated to London, UK, which provided her with a culturally diverse upbringing. During her high school years in the UK, she played the trombone in her school's orchestra band.
Tiwatope attended the University of Kent, where she earned a degree in business administration. This education later proved invaluable in her international music endeavors. Afterward, she briefly worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Upon receiving an opportunity to contribute backup vocals for Mary J. Blige, Tiwa Savage decided to focus more intently on her music career. Tiwa Savage's musical journey began at the age of 16. She lent her voice to songs by Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, and Ms. Dynamite. She even participated in the UK edition of The X Factor, making it to the final 24 but being eliminated in the 12th round of the competition.
In 2009, she signed her first publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. This arrangement allowed her to write for artists such as Babyface, Kat Deluna, Fantasia, Monica, and Mýa. Her return to Nigeria was met with a recording deal from Mavin Records, owned by Don Jazzy.
Tiwatope Savage was once married to Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun, and they share a son named Jamil Balogun. Rumors circulated about a potential romantic involvement between Tiwa Savage and Wizkid after her divorce.
Tiwa Savage has also graced the television screen. She has appeared in MTV Shuga season 3, Jenifa’s Diary, and For Colored Girls.
