Saturday Night Live has generated far too many renowned comedic actors and long, prosperous careers to be associated with any type of curse, but the iconic variety sketch show has seen tragedy strike a number of its alumni. Few tragedies were more stunning or sad than the death of Phil Hartman, who was shot to death in his sleep by his wife on May 28, 1998.
Unlike late performers like John Belushi and Chris Farley, who were larger-than-life characters, or Gilda Radner, who was an iconic original, Hartman was an adaptable everyman who layered subtle charm and smarm into original characters while nailing impressions of the rich, famous, and powerful. Hartman, a normally timid person who was educated and had a successful career as a graphic designer, switched to comedy after volunteering to go on stage at a performance by the legendary Groundlings ensemble in Los Angeles.

Tracy Newman, a comedian and founding member of The Groundlings, told ABC years later, "it was like a hurricane hit that stage, and I mean that in a positive way."
