He attended the London School of Economics, Columbia Southwest School in New York, New York, USA, and the Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, where he also earned two certificates in the Senior Executive Program and Chief Executive Officers Program. He also attended Lagos Business School in Nigeria, where he completed his Chief Executive Officers program, and Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he completed two programs. After Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba won the general elections, Peter Obi announced his resignation on May 29, 2007. Returning to court, he argued that the four-year term he won in the elections of 2003 only started to run in March 2006, when he took office. On June 14, 2007, the Nigerian Supreme Court upheld Peter Obi's claim and ordered his reinstatement.

The Supreme Court rejected Andy Uba's election on April 14, 2007, because Obi's four-year term should have expired in March 2010, therefore ending Uba's stint as Peter Obi's successor.

Peter Obi defeated Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, a former governor of the state of Anambra, in the 2010 gubernatorial election, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
