She is a TV and film producer, talk show host, actress, philanthropist, and author. She is the host and producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show, for which she has achieved international acclaim. 


At one point, Oprah Winfrey was the only Black Billionaire and the richest African-American in the world.

Oprah Winfrey's Childhood

Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She was named Orpah after a biblical figure, but because her name was frequently mispronounced as "Oprah," she decided to stick with the latter. Patricia Lofton, Patricia Lee Lloyd, and Jeffrey Lee are her siblings.

Vernon Winfrey and Vernita Lee gave birth to her. Her parents were unmarried when she was born. When Oprah Winfrey was born, her mother was still a teenager. 

Vernon Winfrey, her father, was a coal miner who also worked as a barber and later became a councilman. Her mother, Vernita Lee, worked as a housemaid at the same time. 

Vernita Lee relocated from Mississippi to the northern part of the country after giving birth to Oprah Winfrey. So, for the first six years of her life, Oprah Winfrey lived with her maternal grandmother. Her grandmother taught her to read when she was three years old. She eventually moved in with her mother.

Oprah Winfrey attended Lincoln High School in Milwaukee for her secondary education. She did not complete her studies at the school, however, and later transferred to Nicolet High School.

Oprah Winfrey's first job was at a radio station in Tennessee while she was still in high school. She was the co-anchor for the local evening news by the age of nineteen. She then relocated to Chicago and began working as a daytime talk show host/anchor. She was successful in transforming a third-rated show in Chicago into the city's top show. 

She began The Oprah Winfrey Show after launching her own production company. On September 8, 1986, the first episode was broadcast nationally. By 1998, the show had risen to the top of the daytime talk show ratings in the United States. The show began as a tabloid talk show. 

Oprah Winfrey later expanded her topics to include heart disease, spirituality, geopolitics, and meditation. 

In 1988, Oprah Winfrey produced and starred in the drama miniseries The Women Of Brewster Place as a filmmaker. She portrayed Sofia in the 1985 film The Color Purple. Other films in which she has appeared include The Native Son, Brewster Place, Lincoln, There Are No Children Here, Ellen, Before Women Had Wings, Beloved, Charlotte's Web, and Sesame Street.
