Luo music has recently gained popularity in the Mount Kenya region. Even if many residents don't understand the lyrics, the music is met with enthusiastic dancing, cheering, and screaming as revellers have a good time.
Although many regard Mt Kenya and Nyanza as political adversaries, fans of Luo music in Mt Kenya believe the music unites them.
"It is only our politicians who drive a wedge between us...there has never been any logical difference between us. A Luo has no objections to our music, and we enjoy theirs. We adore their girls, and they adore ours. Mt Kenya and Luo Nyanza are one big family, except for politics," says Epha Maina, chairman of the Musicians and Composers Association.
Kanungo by Otieno Aloka became a local anthem in Mount Kenya in 2005, with even schoolchildren belting it out and dancing to its beats.
Odongo Swagg is now taking the stage in the region, with the powerful Ohangla beat and tracks like Lindah driving revellers insane.
Collins Otieno Owigo was born in the Rarieda constituency of Siaya County 30 years ago. He explained that the name "Odongo" is an ancestral name, and his fans nicknamed him "Swag" because of his entertainment vibe, which led to the creation of his stage name Odongo Swagg.
He claims he was born a musician and that "deep down my soul knew it was not [meant] to be" even when he pursued carpentry as a trade.
According to Odongo Swagg, carving a niche in music was not easy, and the financial cost was also high. But, with hard work, savings from menial jobs, and the help of a slew of well-wishers, he was able to record his songs.
He credits Onyango Jakadenge as the Ohangla maestro who shaped him and introduced him to promoter Wuod Fibi, who he claims has made him a brand to be reckoned with.
