"Hey, Motif, turn up the volume on those headphones bro..."
This is a line that has become synonymous with Khaligraph Jones whenever he introduces a hit, to the point where Motif has become a faceless character in the majority of his hits.
Morris Kobia, also known as Motif di Don in celebrity and entertainment circles, is the unassuming individual who cranks up Khaligraph on "them headphones."
He is arguably one of the best beatmakers in the country right now, as evidenced by how many songs he has produced and mastered. Almost every song nowadays begins with the words "Motif Di Don."
Motif honed his production skills by creating beats and selling them to Kenyan upcoming artists.
Motif has worked on a number of certified hits by well-known Kenyan and African artists. From Khaligraph's raw Hip-hop beats to Ethics street anthems to Masauti's mellow vibes, he now co-owns Dream Nation with Masauti.
This experience is also reflected in his concept of music as a collaborative endeavor and his belief that the sum of different talents results in something that cannot be achieved individually.
Motif is not afraid to speak out about the recent allegations that he stole a beat.
During the controversy, BonEye of p-Unit took to social media to criticize "lazy producers" and cast doubt on their authenticity.
Motif did not take this lying down, taking on BonEye because p-Unit had already sampled beats in their hit songs, You Guy and Weka Weka earlier in their careers; instead of pointing fingers, he questioned the authenticity and originality of those beats.
"As much as I try to stay out of the spotlight and avoid unnecessary beef, I have noticed that there is some hatred among artistes; these young and upcoming artistes need our support, and as I previously stated, it is always a learning process," he says, brushing off the beef.
The beats don believes he is here to change the landscape rather than compete with others because music has been a passion of his since he was a child.
His music is timeless, connecting with Kenyan cultural richness and projecting the search for new styles and rhythms through a mix of past and present and always adapting to the changing dynamics of Kenyan sound in his production.
