Mbuzi Gang is not your typical boy band, despite consistently producing hits that will light up your party. You might think of them as self-proclaimed goats who have barely scratched the surface of the music industry.
The name MBUZI is an acronym that stands for Money Bitches Under Zero Influence. You're not entirely wrong either; the name Mbuzi literally means "Goat."
They are, indeed, a group of young rappers attempting to make a name for themselves in Kenya and, more broadly, East Africa. Most of their fans regard them as the goats of gengetone music.
Their first three hit songs, 'Sherehe sheria,' 'Shamra shamra,' and 'Wagithomo,' established them as hit makers in Kenya. These two songs are popular among Kenyans because they depict the lifestyle of a typical Kenyan, young or old, who enjoys partying and having a good time.
The Mbuzi gang performs music because they believe it is their duty and obligation to entertain their fans. So they can't really predict which songs will be popular, but they believe in the process of creating and performing music.
Mbuzi Gang's Formation.
Mbuzi Gang, like any other street or village boy band, had to go through the normal stages of development before they were ready to shine.
The Mbuzi Gang started out as two high school friends, Joeface and Iphoolish, making music.
The two were not only childhood friends, but also high school classmates and Cardinal Otunga High School graduates.
They discovered their love for music in high school, when they performed at music festivals and were frequently in the spotlight representing their school.
Father Moh joined the group later, when he was attempting to secure a music record collaboration with the group's lead act, Joeface.
Because the original two members were rappers who focused solely on writing bars, an opportunity arose later when the group needed a talented artist to sing the chorus.
Father Moh had to prove himself as a hook master through the audition and interview process. He was chosen among the many contestants because he was a naturally born talent with a complete dedication to making good music.
The group was finished in 2019. Father Moh graduated from Onjiko High School in Kisumu at this time.
Black Market Records and Mbuzi Gang.
Black Market Records Africa is one of the largest record labels in Africa that focuses on discovering and promoting new talent.
The record label has been at the forefront of nurturing these young talents who are attempting to make it in the Kenyan music industry since its inception.
While still in college, Cedric Singleton, the C.E.O of Black Market Records, approached Joeface, the Mbuzi Gang group leader, and proposed signing him as one of their artists.
The group has an exceptional work ethic. Despite the fact that the majority of their songs are direct hits that top the charts and radio playlists, they still spend time in the studio and avoid being sucked in by fame and unlimited attention from the girls.
The Ascension of the Mbuzi Gang to fame.
The group rose to prominence in 2019 with their first hit song,'shamra shamra,' which received widespread airplay and earned them a devoted following in Kenya and throughout East Africa.
Prior to that, they released a single called 'wagothomo,' which did well and paved the way for them in the industry. This track demonstrated what was possible and how much effort was required to make more things happen.
The song was produced by Black Market Signed producer Kash Keed, who is one of East Africa's most talented hit makers.
They have risen to fame as a group while adhering to their group philosophy of "get it done." That is why they have been consistent in producing the music that they do.
