Did you know that Tanzanian-born Kenyan singer Nesphory Simbiga, better known as Kidis, has lived in the country for 20 years?
It is for this reason that Kidis of Kamua Leo fame believes he should be labeled a Kenyan.
Kidis talks on his artistic experience with Nairobi News ahead of the release of a new song titled Chunaa. Excerpts:
Kidis - Who is he?
My birthplace is Tanzania, but I relocated to Mombasa in 1996. I am now residing in Nairobi. My parents couldn't afford to pay for my high school education, so I migrated to Kenya after finishing primary school.
My stage name Kidis originates from the American film Three Ninja Youngsters, which I used to terrorize kids in school by replicating the motions of the characters in the film. As a result, the moniker remained.
How has your musical journey gone?
We began as a group of 17 artists in Mombasa in the year 2000, when the Rainbow Coalition was created. It wasn't easy because budding artists couldn't even afford to buy a blank CD back then.
We used to travel around and ask DJs to play our songs at funerals or weddings, even if it was only for 10 minutes. That's how I got my start in music.
I used to pull a handcart and sell water for a shilling per jerrican before I started singing. I even worked for a construction company once and was paid Sh70 per day.
Do you have a relationship?
No, I am not because the person I am with would not understand me as an artist for a variety of reasons. For example, many female followers like to email me nude images out of nowhere; imagine lying next to your wife or girlfriend in the middle of the night; she will not understand and will accuse you of cheating on her.
