Crystal Asige's Biography in Summary

Crystal Asige is my name. I was reared in Mombasa and attended school there. Later on, I was given the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom. I am the fourth child in a family of four. She is currently a senate assembly nominee and was once a member of the sauti sol music band. She recently sued the band for unpaid royalties.

Tell us about your interest in music and theater, and how it all began.

My mother says she discovered I liked singing when I was four years old. She claims that when I was in nursery school, I would come home singing and would continue to sing throughout the house.

My mother was an important figure at the time because she encouraged me to participate more in the arts, which I was already interested in. From elementary school to high school, I was an enthusiastic participant in anything that challenged me to be creative and placed me on stage to perform, such as reciting poems, performing in plays, and competing in drama festivals.

At what point did you start having issues with your eyesight?

It was around the same time I was 15 or 16 years old. It wasn't something I was concerned about at the time because I was still getting things done without much problem. I was still involved in sports and theater. Life hadn't changed much, but in retrospect, that's when my eyesight began to deteriorate.

I was no longer able to sit in the back of the classroom. I had to sprint after every break in order to get a seat near the board. I didn't want my peers to know I was having trouble seeing because I was afraid they would scorn or ridicule me.

When did you later find out the exact condition that you were suffering from?

I went to the UK in Bristol which was where I attended university to study film and theatre. I went for a general checkup and the doctor told me that there was something seriously wrong with my eyes. He said that the pressure was three times higher than the normal pressure in the human eye.

The news took me by surprise and really shocked me because the doctor was quite serious in the way that he gave me the news. He told me to drop whatever I had planned to do that weekend and go straight to the hospital. Still alarmed, I went to the hospital and after a series of tests were done over some time, I was finally given a diagnosis of having glaucoma.

They told me at the hospital that glaucoma is more aggressive in black people due to the color of our eyes. I was also told that there is no known cure for it and that the best they could do was prescribe something to alleviate my agony. They also told me that because I was so young and my case had advanced so far, it would take roughly three years for me to go completely blind.

I was devastated because I was only 20 years old and in my second year of university at the time. A lot of things rushed before my eyes, and I thought about everything my parents had done for me in order for me to have a solid education.
