Paul Julius Nunda, best known by his stage name Jua Cali, was born on September 12, 1979 in Nairobi, Kenya. He launched Calif Records in 2000 with record producer Clemo, where he has been ever since. Jua Cali performs genge, a prominent Kenyan rapping technique, in Swahili and Shengm.
Ruka, his first recorded track, was released in 2001, followed by Nipe Asali in 2002. He partnered with Pilipili on the song "Kamata Dame" in 2004. His first full-length record, like that of most Kenyan artists, took several years to be released. His album "Juacali Sekta" was published in 2006 and consisted primarily of previously released hits.
In 2007, his tune Kwaheri (with Sainapei Tande, Coca-Cola pop sensation and radio broadcaster) was a big smash in Kenya. Ngeli ya Genge, his new album, was released on New Year's Eve 2008/2009. He has toured the United States and other countries.
In August 2007, The Standard newspaper named him one of the 100 most influential Kenyans.
His stage name Jua Cali is inspired from California, a Nairobi estate (as is the name of Calif Records). It also resembles Jua Kali, a Swahili term for a strong sun that has come to allude to Kenya's informal economy.
He has released a series of new tracks with a new producer from the United States, Keggah. Karibu Nairobi and Kuna Sheng are two of his recent songs that have received a lot of exposure and positive feedback.
