Ivan Semwanga: Early Life and Education
Born in Nakaliro, Kayunga District, Ivan Semwanga relocated to South Africa in search of better opportunities. There are claims that he was involved in ritual practices at a local shrine there. His parents were George Semwanga Pinto Lutaaya and Liize Semwanga.
Ivan Semwanga helped affluent South Africans by performing rituals involving holy water to alleviate their problems. This enabled him to amass significant wealth, culminating in a multimillion-dollar business empire by the time of his passing. His enterprises included schools, student hostels, and apartments in South Africa.
He earned the moniker "modern father of Showbiz" in Uganda for revitalizing the socialite scene. He imparted his knowledge to many of the current socialites in the country. Ivan Semwanga married Zari Hassan, with whom he shares three sons: Pinto Semwanga, George Semwanga, and Dido Semwanga. In 2011, they organized an extravagant traditional introduction ceremony that cost over a billion Ugandan shillings. Their relationship later ended due to allegations of domestic violence from Zari Hassan, who is now married to Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz.

Ivan Semwanga established Brooklyn College with branches across Durban, Pretoria, and Johannesburg, focusing on Information Technology, mining, and Policing services. He was constructing a hotel in Uganda and owned properties in Bunga, Munyonyo, and Mutungo. His various projects yielded over Shs700 million in profits monthly. He also owned prominent houses in Sandton and Pretoria.
Ivan Semwanga: Generosity
Ivan Semwanga was regarded as the chairman of Ugandans in South Africa, offering assistance to the needy in both countries. He donated essential items to an orphanage in Nsambya three weeks before his death. His generosity extended to the Uganda National Football team, donating Ugandan Shs10 million during a match against Ghana and promising more for every goal scored. He even sponsored fans from South Africa to watch a Uganda vs. Zambia game live.
Ivan Semwanga: Cause of Death
Ivan Semwanga suffered a heart attack after leaving Uganda. He was admitted to Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria, where his ex-wife Zari Hassan cared for him. He passed away on May 25, 2017.
Ivan Semwanga: Burial
His body was brought back to Uganda and underwent a vigil and church prayers before being buried in Kayunga, his ancestral home. During his life, he was known for throwing notes of currency at parties. At his burial, members of the Rich Gang, a group he was associated with, tossed South African Rands, Uganda Shillings, US Dollars, and Champagne into his grave. Concerned citizens sought to exhume his body to retrieve the currency, but the Bank of Uganda declined, citing damage and defacement.
