Kenton College Preparatory was where he received his primary education. He completed his high school education at St. Mary's School Nairobi and Strathmore School before graduating from St. Mary's School in 1982. He graduated from Strathmore University in 1980. He also holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Salford.

Before entering politics, Towett was and still is a businessman. In 2003, he was elected as a member of parliament for Baringo Central. Gideon was elected to the Senate in 2013 and has served since then. KANU formed an alliance with Uhuru Kenyatta's party and supported him in the 2017 presidential elections.

He is also the chairman of the Senate Information and Technology Committee, and he announced his intention to run for president in the 2022 elections. He is going up against his fellow tribesman, William Ruto, and his popularity has grown since announcing his intention, especially since he is Daniel Moi's son.
