The appointment of Major General Fatuma Gaiti as Kenya Airforce Commander goes down in history as the first to have ever been made.

Having broken the glass ceiling, she has become the country's first female Airforce Commander which has been translated as a big win for Kenyan women.
Early Life and Education
Fatima Gaiti Ahmed was born in 1965. She finished her secondary education at Nairobi's Aga Khan High School in 1983.
Joining the military.
Major Gen Gaiti began her military career quite by accident.
When she finished secondary school in 1983, she was just trying to get her identification card when she came across a military recruitment exercise.
She decided to try her luck, and to her surprise, she was chosen to join the military.
She enrolled in the Kenya Military Academy as an officer cadet in 1984 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Kenya Air Force in 1985.
Career Development
Fatuma Ahmed's career in the Kenya Defence Forces spanned several decades, during which she held a number of key positions.
She began her career in the Women's Service Corps before joining the Kenya Air Force in 1999, when the unit was integrated into the military.
She has held various positions throughout her career, including Battalion Second in Command, Staff Officer II Audit Personnel and Records, and Staff Officer I Personnel and Administration.
She advanced to the rank of Colonel Personnel at Kenya Air Force Headquarters before becoming the Managing Director of the Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme.
Historic Promotions
Fatuma made history in August 2015 when she became Kenya's first woman promoted to Brigadier.
Her groundbreaking journey did not end there; in July 2018, she became Kenya's first female Major General.
Her promotion to this rank was hailed as a watershed moment in promoting gender equality within the Kenyan military.
Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed was assigned to the National Defence College in 2023 as Senior Director of Staff Air.

In addition to her military training, Major General Ahmed has received formal education to supplement her roles.
She graduated from both the National Defense University and the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies. She also holds a management diploma from Strathmore University.
