The Kenyan media business is a shaky one. Journalists are dismissed at will, and it requires tenacity to thrive in this cutthroat industry, which has been exacerbated by the rise of social media and impatient bloggers who broadcast news before it has been processed. Media proprietors are only interested in working with the top journalists. Emmanuel Juma is an excellent example of someone who has remained relevant over time. He is well-known for his political satire show 'Bulls Eye,' which airs on NTV every Friday after the prime time news.
Emmanuel Juma Career
Emmanuel, like many other veteran Kenyan journalists, began his career at the state-owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). He spent some time there before joining the Kenya Television Network (KTN).
He was a reporter at KTN. While at KTN, he honed his skills in news gathering and reporting. He used to host a program called 'Parting Shot,' which was akin to Bull's Eye.
Emmanuel Juma Getting Fired
He was among the journalists fired by Nation Media Group in January 2018, along with other well-known figures such as Lolanu Kalu, who used to host the Malimwengu section. Many people were surprised because the journalist was one of the station's mainstays, having been there for almost ten years. NTV stated redundancy as the primary reason for the firing, and the corporation also sought to increase profitability.
Emmanuel Juma then moved to work for the newly founded Switch TV, which was owned by the Red Cross Society and was about to rebrand as RedCross TV. Juma quit the station a month after it debuted to rejoin NTV.
According to Business Daily, NTV lost the majority of its presenters and reporters following the restructure to Citizen TV, which invaded its newsroom after recruiting former NTV General Manager Linus Kaikai. Juma's comeback, according to the newspaper, began to take shape in June 2018, approximately 6 months after he was shown the door out of the station. It was revealed that NMG was considering rehiring some of the TV journalists it had fired in January to patch the gap left by the departure of the journalists on whom it had intended to rely.
