Watenya Sifuna was born on May 22nd, 1986. He is from Bungoma County, and he began his studies there as well. He and Sifuna Lawrence, a former Kanduyi and Bungoma South Member of Parliament, are siblings.

Edwin Watenya is a UoN (University of Nairobi) graduate who began his legal career there. Following graduation, he enrolled in the Kenya School of Law to get a law diploma. He recalls his undergraduate days as enjoyable and memorable. He enjoyed partying and would spend his money on parties and drinking with his friends.
Sifuna's political activities began on campus, where he was among student strikers protesting the new required need for law students to enroll in the Kenya School of Law after graduating from their undergraduate studies.

Edwin Watenya began his career as a lawyer at Kairu & Mc Court Advocates in 2005, where he stayed for a year before leaving for a Legal and Administration Officer position at Mini Group of Companies in 2009. After a year, he was hired as Manager, Administration, and Legal by Magnate Ventures Ltd, a leading advertising firm. He worked there for three years before establishing his own firm, Watenya Sifuna & Company Advocates. The firm specializes in employment and corporate law. In 2019, he was appointed Vice Chairperson of the Center for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) - Kenya.
In the 2017 general election, he stood for the Nairobi senatorial seat, promising to address key issues such as widespread unemployment, trash management, and traffic congestion. However, he and other competitors such as Dennis Nthumbi and Suzanne Lengwa were defeated by Johnstone Sakaja.
In February 2018, Edwin Sifuna succeeded Ababu Namwamba as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement. His responsibilities include supervising party affairs and pushing party agendas. He is a strong supporter of the Building Bridges Initiative and has a solid relationship with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Edwin Sifuna and LSK President Nelson Havi had a heated debate on Citizen TV on January 19, 2021, following a discussion on Law vs Politics. Nelson, according to Sifuna, got the title of president of the Law Society of Kenya into his head and wanted everyone to respect him as such.
The debate focused on the BBI, the numerous factions running for the top seat in Nairobi County, and Kenya's judiciary. Viewers reacted differently to the interview, with some applauding Nelson Havi on his leadership of LSK and others seeing it as a thrashing by Sifuna on Nelson Havi.
