Doja Cat was born in Los Angeles' Tarzana neighborhood and moved to Rye, New York shortly afterward. She lived in New York for five years before returning to California. From the ages of 8 to 12, Doja Cat lived at Sai Anantam Ashram, a Hindu commune in Santa Monica, California, led by jazz musician John Coltrane's wife, Alice. Doja Cat learned Bharatanatyam dance during her stay there. However, she found life on the commune to be restrictive.

"It was very restraining," she explained to Rolling Stone. "My brother enjoyed it. He had many friends. But I had few friends. For me, it was simply, 'I can't eat whatever I want. "I can't really do kid stuff." Like, God forbid you don't wear a scarf around your shoulders." When the family left the ashram, they returned to Tarzana.
