Rada, a 1999 theatre group featuring Angela Ndambuki aka Rabbo, Liana Ochola aka Achi, Annette Getecha, and Debbie Asila, existed long before Tattuu.
Rada was an acronym formed from the names of the members, which arose from Phoenix Players, the participatory theatre where Debbie and the other members of Tattuu — then also known as Smirnoff Ice Girls — honed their showbiz skills.
Debbie walked into Phoenix Players auditorium after graduating from Buru Buru Secondary School in 1999, a young and shy Debbie, for auditions for Jack and the Beanstalk, a musical play. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Rada, the feisty footloose girls, quickly took over Nairobi showbiz. They were both daring and admirable. Angela Mwandanda aka Shinde and Rhoda Nkatha joined them. Rada did in urban Kenya in 1999 what the Spice Girls, the British pop girl group that ruled the world with chartbusting music, did in 1996.
Debbie and her fellow Rada members, who were also known as Ogopalets before changing their name to Tattuu, performed in Nameless' music videos Mannerless, Megarider, and Majitu. That was before they competed in the Carnivore Restaurant's Star Search dancing competition (in 2002).
Teso, their hit song, became an instant hit, quickly followed by Haiya, Songea, Napepea, Solophobia, and Parapanda receiving good airplay.
Debbie landed a job as a presenter in 2003 and began hosting Warehouse, an interactive music show. She then went on to present Karaoke at Pizza Garden. Debbie was in her final year at Daystar University at the time, and there was no stopping her from becoming one of the region's top showbiz princesses.
Debbie met Shaffie Weru, an ambitious young man who had just graduated from college, at the pinnacle of Tattuu's success. He had majored in mass communication.
Debbie was expecting Shaffie's baby, the lovely Milan, in 2005.
Despite the fact that the couple split up last year after a falling out in which they traded accusations on social media, the Debbie-Shaffie affair was not without controversy. In fact, it was never a surprise when the two announced their separation, much as it won't be a surprise if the two got back together. They're like stormy soulmates!
They had only been dating for two years when rumors of their breakup made headlines in Hollywood. That happened in October 2004. They both, however, dismissed the rumors and announced that they were getting married.
"Shaffie and I are fine; we are in love and planning to marry." "Ask him if you don't believe me." Debbie is quoted as saying back
Debbie landed a job at Kiss FM, the same station where Shaffie worked, and their romantic relationship was at its peak that year. Their wedding plans were in high gear, despite the fact that their divorce rumors had worsened.
The arrival of Joan, Shaffie's newcomer girlfriend, is said to have moved Debbie to tears, especially after Shaffie announced his intention to marry Joan.
Debbie's only desire was to keep the split private.
Debbie was rumored to be dating another man in January of this year, and a photo of her began making the rounds on the Internet.
Her departure from Classic FM and subsequent appearance on Papa Shirandula elicited conflicting reactions.
