Early Life

Her father later became a member of the country's senate, while her mother, who worked in family planning, became a leader with the Africa Cancer Foundation.

Nyong'o returned to Mexico in her teens to learn Spanish after taking up drama and landing the main part in a performance of Romeo and Juliet. She attended Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she received her bachelor's degree in film in 2003.
