Wambua's career began in 1997 as a Public Relations Officer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. In 2000, he took a similar position with the Tea Board of Kenya. His second job was with the Communications Authority of Kenya, where he began as an Assistant Public Relations Manager.

Wambua had been the Communication Manager at the college for nearly fourteen years. He was then promoted to Assistant Director, Multimedia Content and Innovation. Wambua was the Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Kenya Films Classification Board before being selected as the new CEO.
